After having a figurative (and literal) bullseye on it recently for its lack of a policy on whether customers can bring guns into stores, Target announced it would prohibit them, even in states where carrying guns in public is allowed.
"Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," Target's interim CEO John Mulligan said in a statement.
The decision comes after Indiana-based gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America initiated a petition requesting that Target management forbid customers from openly carrying firearms in its stores given the store’s mom-centric customer base. The petition was a reaction to photos of activists carrying semi-automatic weapons in a Target circulated online. More than 400,000 people signed the petition, according to Moms Demand Action.
On Monday, San Antonio news station KSAT reported that a Moms Demand Action group was asked to leave a Target where it staged a protest.
"Target's decision shows that moms calling for reasonable reforms can move giants," Erika Soto Lamb, communications director for a coalition of gun reform organizations that include Moms Demand Action, told The Huffington Post.
The group posted its own celebratory statement on its website. Meanwhile, pro-gun advocates posted to Target's Facebook page, calling for boycotts.
Target is the biggest company yet to ban guns in its locations, following in the footsteps of other retail stores and chains such as Chipotle, Chili’s, Sonic and Starbucks.
